Footnotes

1 Probably the Wagner monument designed by the sculptor Emil Hipp, intended for the Richard-Wagner-Hain in Leipzig – an area of parkland intended to honor the composer in his birthplace. Hitler laid the foundation stone on March 6, 1934, but the monument was never erected. In 1945 the city of Leipzig refused to accept the work, on account of the Nazis’ strong links with Wagnerian ideology, although it had already been paid for and built.
