Manhattan School of Music, the origins of which go back to 1913, was established by Janet Daniels Schenck in 1917. In 1920 it incorporated as the Neighborhood Music School and established its first home at 238 East 105th Street. The School was renamed as the Manhattan School of Music in 1938. In the 1940s it was authorized first to grant the degree of bachelor of music, and then that of master of music. In 1969 the School moved to 120 Claremont Avenue, on the West Side of Manhattan, the former Juilliard School of Music building.
