Town in Belarus, where the negotiations between Russia and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) began in December 1917. The Russians withdrew from the talks on February 10, 1918; an armistice was reached on February 18, but the Central Powers then seized the Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltic countries, the final treaty, signed on March 3, 1918, being to the disadvantage of Russia.

Schenker commented acidly of Russia's behavior in his diary for January 9, 1918 (OJ 2/10, pp. 826–827).
